Caliche sits close to the surface across most of Odessa. It is a hardened calcium carbonate layer that behaves less like soil and more like soft rock, and it is the reason so many traditional lawns here struggle. It holds water at the surface rather than draining it, roots cannot get through it easily, and any landscaping installed without addressing it properly will move, sink or pool within a couple of seasons.
Combine that with summer heat, wind and the cost of keeping a natural lawn alive through a Permian Basin August, and the arithmetic points one direction. A properly installed turf and rock yard is the version that still looks the same in five years.
